Production[edit]

Development[edit]

In April 2018, Warner Bros. announced July 3, 2019, as the release date for a then-untitled new film in the Conjuring Universe franchise. Later that month, it was announced that the film would be another installment in the Annabelle series, with Gary Dauberman signed on to write and direct the film in his directorial debut, based on a story treatment written by Dauberman and James Wan.[5] Wan and Peter Safran will co-produce the project.[6]
During the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con, James Wan and Peter Safran revealed the film's events would take place after Annabelle and would focus on the doll after she was kept in the glass box in the Warrens' museum.[7] Gary Dauberman later confirmed this by stating that the film will take place shortly after the beginning of The Conjuring where the titular character is introduced, but also before many of the events of the franchise's first installment.[8]
On September 5, 2018, Michael Burgess was hired as the film's cinematographer.[9] On March 30, 2019, Kirk Morri was hired as the film's editor.[10]

Casting[edit]

In late September 2018, Mckenna Grace had been cast in the film as Judy Warren, the Warrens' 10-year-old daughter, as had Madison Iseman, as one of Judy's teenage babysitters.[11] By October, Katie Sarife had joined the cast. That same month, it was announced Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga would reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren.[5]

Filming[edit]

Production had commenced by October 17, 2018, in Los Angeles.[2][5] On December 7, 2018, Patrick Wilson announced that he had finished filming his scenes.[12] Filming officially wrapped on December 14, 2018.[13]

Music[edit]

In February 2019, Joseph Bishara – who composed the score for The ConjuringAnnabelleThe Conjuring 2 and The Curse of La Llorona – was revealed to be returning to score Annabelle Comes Home.[14]

Marketing[edit]

On March 15, 2019, New Line Cinema released a teaser revealing the official title of the movie.[15][16][17] The first trailer for the film was released on March 30, 2019.[18] On April 9, 2019, a trailer for the film introduced a new entity, "The Bride".[19]

Release[edit]

Annabelle Comes Home is scheduled to be released on June 28, 2019, by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema.[1] It was originally scheduled for release on July 3, 2019.[5]

The film was officially announced in July 2018, a modern version of Child's Playthat was in development at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer without the involvement of franchise creator Don Mancini or Brad Dourif. Lars Klevberg and writer Tyler Burton Smith signed on as director and screenwriter, respectively, alongside Itproducers Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg.
The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 21, 2019, by Orion Pictures.

  • Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky, a murderous Buddi doll who attempts to kill the Barclays. • Aubrey Plaza as Karen Barclay, Andy’s mother.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

On July 3, 2018, it was announced that a modern-day version of Child's Play, a reboot, was in development at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with a different creative team than the original film series. Lars Klevberg signed on as director, with a script by Tyler Burton Smith (of Polaroid and Quantum Break fame, respectively). It and It: Chapter Two collaborative team Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg will serve as producers.[2][3]
In December 2018, in a guest appearance on the Post Mortem with Mick Garris Podcast, series creator/writer/director Don Mancini criticized the remake, remarking that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, as rights holder for the original film, can do what they please with the property. When asked if he and fellow franchise producer David Kirschner would have any involvement, he said:
We said no thank you, because we have our ongoing thriving business with Chucky. Obviously my feelings were hurt... And I did create the character and nurture the franchise for three [...] decades. So when someone says, Oh yeah, we would love to have your name on the film... it was hard not to feel like I was being patronized. They just wanted our approval. Which I strenuously denied them.[4]

Casting[edit]

The same month that the project was announced, Liv Tyler was revealed as having been considered for a role in the film.[5] In September 2018, Aubrey PlazaBrian Tyree Henry and Gabriel Bateman joined the cast.[6][7] In November 2018, Ty Consiglio and Beatrice Kitsos joined the cast.[8]
In March 2019, actor Mark Hamill announced that he joined the cast to voice Chucky in the film. Grahame-Smith elaborated on Hamill's casting in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying,
We asked, thinking there was no way it would ever happen, and he said, 'Yes.' He was the first choice, a big swing, and it just happened. [...] I mean, first of all, to have an icon reimagining an iconic character is an incredible gift, and to have an actor and a voice performer who is as celebrated as Mark Hamill, and as gifted as he is, I mean it's incredible. He's taking on this challenge with a huge amount of energy and really come at it in a very serious way. And it's really something to watch him create a character, and sort of embody it, and I get to sit there and watch Mark Hamill record. It's just incredible.[9]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography began on September 17 and wrapped on November 8, 2018, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada[10] Reshoots occurred on December 15 and 16,[11] and in April 2019.[12]

Visual effects[edit]

MastersFX, a visual effects company, took six weeks to prepare and assemble seven practical animatronic puppets, each with interchangeable arms and heads that performed a variety of required actions on set.[13] With some help from Pixomondo, who will be providing the CGI for the film.[14]

Music[edit]

On April 10, 2019, it was announced that Bear McCreary would be composing the score.[15][16] In a statement, McCreary revealed that he was partially creating the film's music through a "toy orchestra" inspired by "Chucky’s toy-store origins" with toy pianoshurdy gurdiesaccordions, plastic guitars, and otamatones featuring prominently in the score.[17]

Marketing[edit]

The first official image of Chucky was released on September 21, 2018.[18] A poster was released on November 12, 2018, revealing that for the film's adaptation the Good Guy Dolls will be called Buddi, referencing the real-life My Buddy doll that influenced the character's original design.[19] A WiFi symbol over the "i" in "Buddi" teases the character's hi-tech functions in the film, being similar to robot toys such as Furby, or RoboSapien, which makes a cameo in the trailer.[20] Orion Pictureslaunched a marketing website, for the fictional Kaslan Corp, ahead of the film's release.[21]
The first trailer was released on February 8, 2019 to coincide with the release of The Prodigy.[1] The theatrical poster was released on April 17, 2019 and a second trailer on April 18, 2019.[22]

Release[edit]

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 21, 2019.[23][19] It will be the first film from Orion Pictures to be released through United Artists Releasing,[24] which will mark, in some way, a reuniting of the Child's Play franchise with the UA brand since the original film.

Future[edit]

At WonderCon, Grahame-Smith said that if this film does well, they would love to make more sequels.[25]

Production

Development

In a 2010 interview, Lee Unkrich stated that Pixar was not planning a fourth film after Toy Story 3, but also that he was "flattered that people ask about it—it reminds me how much people love the characters, but it was really important to me with this film that we not just create another sequel, that it not just be another appendage coming off of the other two... there may be opportunities for Woody and Buzz in the future, but we don't have any plans for anything right now."[29] Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were signed on tentatively to provide the voices of Woody and Buzz; Hanks stated the following year that he believed Pixar was working on a sequel.[7][30] Rumors arose that Toy Story 4 was in production and slated for release in 2015, but Disney denied these rumors in February 2013, stating "nothing is official."[31]
Toy Story 4 was officially announced by Disney during an investor's call on November 6, 2014.[32] Then-studio head of Pixar John Lasseter, who directed the first two films and executive-produced the third, was scheduled to direct after writing a film treatment with Andrew Stanton, with extra input from Pete Docter and Unkrich. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack joined as writers, with Galyn Susman returning as a producer from Ratatouille.[33] Lasseter explained that Pixar decided to produce the sequel because of their "pure passion" for the series, and that the film would be a love story.[34] Lasseter felt that "Toy Story 3ended Woody and Buzz's story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, [Pixar] never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and [Lasseter] came up with this new idea, [He] just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to [him], [he] knew [Pixar] had to make this movie—and [Lasseter] wanted to direct it [himself]."[35]
In March 2015, Pixar president Jim Morris described the film as a romantic comedy and stated it would not be a continuation of the third film, but a separate story from it.[36][37] The same month, Variety reported that Cooley was named co-director, having previously been head of story on Inside Out.[38] According to Lasseter, the film was kept so secret that even Morris and his boss Edwin Catmull had no knowledge of it until the treatment was finished, stressing that "we do not do any sequel because we want to print money" but rather to tell a new story in the same universe.[39] Lasseter stated at D23 Expo 2015 that the film would focus on Woody's relationship with Bo Peep and involved him and Buzz going on a journey to find her.[40]
At D23 Expo in July 2017, Lasseter announced he was stepping down and leaving Cooley as sole director, saying he could no longer commit to directing the film between his positions at Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Disneytoon Studios, although he would still be involved in the film as executive producer,[41][42] however he was uncredited as executive producer in the final film. Jones and McCormack withdrew from the film in November 2017, citing “philosophical differences”.[43] On January 18, 2018, it was announced that the film would be written by Stephany Folsom, who rewrote three quarters of Jones and McCormack's original script according to Potts in June 2018.[44][45] On March 19, 2019, Stanton, who co-wrote the screenplay for the first two films, was revealed to have co-written the screenplay with Folsom.[46]
By September 28, 2018, recording for the film was underway. Tim Allen said that the film's story was "so emotional" that he "couldn't even get through the last scene,"[47] Similarly, Tom Hanks said that the film's ending scene was a "moment in history."[48] On January 30, 2019, Hanks and Allen finished recording their characters' voices.[49]

Casting

Most of the previous voice actors, including Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, signed on to reprise their past voices. Hanks stated in May 2016 that he had finished recording his first lines for Woody.[6][50] Annie Potts was confirmed to be returning as Bo Peep, after being absent from Toy Story 3.[8] Don Rickles intended to reprise his role as Mr. Potato Head, but died in April 2017,[51]before any lines were recorded as the script was still being rewritten.[52] According to Cooley, Rickles' family contacted Pixar and asked if there was any way to include him in the film. Pixar reviewed 25 years of archival material that Rickles had participated in, including unused lines from the first three Toy Story films, video games and other related media for the franchise, and other works, and were able to assemble enough material to use within the film.[14]
Tony Hale was cast as Forky, a homemade toy suffering an existential crisis. Hale has performed roles before with similar panicked characters, notably Buster Bluth on Arrested Development and Gary Walsh on Veep. When asked to voice Forky, Hale said, "A utensil's existential crisis? I'm in!".[53] Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele were cast as a pair of carnival prize plush toys named Ducky and Bunny. Cooley said that while they brought them on to provide some improvised comedy to the film, "they were story motivated which elevated Ducky and Bunny and the film to a level I never could have expected".[54]Additionally, Keanu Reeves will be voicing a character in the film,[25] named Duke Caboom.[26] Reeves said he was contacted out of the blue by Pixar for the role, seeking him to voice the part and letting him develop his own riffs on the character.[55] On March 22, 2019, Madeline McGraw, who previously voiced Maddy McGear in Pixar's Cars 3, was revealed to be voicing Bonnie, replacing Emily Hahn.[28]
